Negotiating new FTAs for the first time and joining CPTPP

Last updated: 10/04/2024

  • The UK is negotiating an FTA with India for the first time, with a target of reaching agreement in principle in early 2024.
  • The government has concluded negotiations on the UK’s accession to the 11 member nations of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Britain will be the first new country to join the trade area since its creation. Spanning the Pacific rim from Malaysia to Chile, CPTPP countries account for 13% of global GDP and are home to 500 million people.
  • Negotiations on an FTA with the Gulf Cooperation Council commenced in 2022, with talks continuing throughout 2023. Agreement in principle is expected in 2024.
  • Timing: this is an area of continuing change and timescales are being determined for each negotiation. CPTPP is likely to enter into force in late 2024, following ratification by member countries.
