Negotiating new FTAs for the first time and joining CPTPP

Last updated: 18/12/2024

  • The UK is negotiating an FTA with India for the first time, with a target of reaching agreement in principle in 2025. The  Labour government has signalled it will agree an FTA as part of a broader UK-India relationship.
  • The UK has acceded to the 11 member Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) trade area. Britain is the first new country to join the trade area since its creation. Spanning the Pacific rim from Malaysia to Chile, existing CPTPP countries account for 13% of global GDP and are home to 500 million people. The agreement entered into force in the UK on 15 December 2024.
  • Negotiations on an FTA with the Gulf Cooperation Council commenced in 2022 and will continue in 2025.
  • Timing: this is an area of continuing change and timescales are being determined for each negotiation.
